Civil Rights in Broward County and South Florida Today Despite the tremendous progress we saw in civil rights in the 60's and 70's, fostered through treacherous times and selfless sacrifice by great leaders and common people alike, there remains a great deal of work to be done in the civil rights arena even in the early years of the 21st Century. The Fort Lauderdale branch of the NAACP has been extremely active in this area, as attested to by the numerous articles in the popular press as well as regular coverage in the local television media of our activities in promoting full civil rights for all and an end to racism and racial intolerance. Current efforts focus on rooting out the discriminatory hiring policies of the City of Fort Lauderdale, and the sanctioning of those responsible for such violations of law. We are also actively lobbying for improved educational funding for schools in predominantly minority neighborhoods, and re-districting to provide a more even balance to the socio-economic mix in our public school system. Further work includes ongoing dialogs with the various local police departments and the Broward's Sheriffs Office with the goal of improving relations between law enforcement agencies and our diverse minority communities.
