Educational Resources on the World Wide Web

The World Wide Web offers students an amazing number of free resources for reference, research, and tutorial purposes. We've collected and categorized a number of our favorite such resources here for your convenience. Non-students will find some fascinating information here too. 

Online Encyclopedias - General

Encarta - No matter how one feels about Microsoft, you have to applaud the free online Encarta Encyclopedia portal.  It also includes online courses, detailed reports on current events, a dictionary, thesaurus, and features for every grade level from Kindergarten to Graduate School. 

Columbia Encyclopedia - The Columbia Encyclopedia began its existence in the 1920s.  Now in it's sixth edition, the entire encyclopedia's content is available online at no cost to users. Containing nearly 51,000 entries (marshalling six and one-half million words on a vast range of topics), and with more than 80,000 hypertext cross-references, the current Edition is among the most complete and up-to-date encyclopedia ever produced.

Encyclopedia Com - A free online encyclopedia presented by the Internet Electric Library with over 50,000 articles with literally millions of links to additional articles and images. 

Nupedia - A rather interesting online experiment, an open encyclopedia entirely supported by the online community. Users are invited to submit articles for publication in the encyclopedia after a committee review.  Most of what we looked at was well developed and very accurate. A resource worth checking out and a noble mission in any case. 

Fact Monster - This wonderful site, a part of the award winning Learning Network, has a fun and lively approach to the online encyclopedia that makes it fun for kids to use. Contains an Atlas, Dictionary, and an Almanac - all in addition to the Encyclopedia and Key Subject Areas like Math, Science, Geography, etc.

Online Encyclopedias - Specialized

Nature Serve Explorer -The Online Encyclopedia of Life - A well developed, informative and fascinating site devoted to ecological matters as well as plant and animal life. 

Webopedia - An award winning online dictionary and search engine devoted to computer technology and the Internet.

Discovery School-Online Encyclopedia of History - A well organized and dazzling site by the people who bring you the Discovery channel on cable television.

How Stuff Works - The title of this award winning site says it all. 

Symbols Com - The online encyclopedia of symbols.  Just about every symbol imaginable is presented here.

Reference Resources

Yahooligans Reference - One of the most complete reference sites on the Internet, complete with American Heritage Dictionary, Roget's Thesaurus II, Britannica Concise Encyclopedia, Gray's Anatomy, The Complete Works of Shakespeare, and the CIA World Fact Book.  

O'Keefe Library "Best Information on the 'Net" Online Reference Resources- An incredibly vast resource developed for students and educators. Developed by St. Ambrose University, you could spend days exploring this one resource alone. 

Merriam-Webster Dictionary Online - The online version of both the collegiate dictionary and thesaurus and links to other resources.

RefDesk Com - "Your Best Source for Facts on the Net", includes reference resources as well as extensive links to hundreds of news, informational, and government resources.

Library Spot - Encyclopedias, maps, online libraries, quotations, dictionaries and more. Also offers a free online newsletter and a constantly changing menu of new features and special reports. 

Student Educational Portals

K to 8 Education Place - A free resource offered by the educational publisher Houghton Mifflin. There are areas for educators, kids and parents with a wide selection of features in each area, but this link goes right o the kid's area.

Education Planet - An incredible portal dedicated to providing a vast number of resources for students, parents and educators.  The "Yahoo" of educational portals. 

AfterSchool.gov - A federally funded site with links to hundreds of educational web sites devoted to kids and teens. Divided into a separate areas for Children and Teenagers, it then breaks out into different specific subject categories.  

The Learning Network - This well designed portal has two areas; one devoted to "school help" and the other devoted to "goof-off time." This site requires the use of the Macromedia Shockwave Player. Click here to download and install the Flash plug-in for your browser. Before downloading, go to the Learning Network site and see if it works, you may already have the Player installed on your computer.

Dositey Educational Site - Grades K to 12. Interactive Lessons, Printable Worksheets, and Educational Software. Covers a wide range of topics and also has areas devoted to educators and parents. 

Kid's Page - This portal, developed by the Multnomah County Library in Portland, Oregon is an excellent example of exemplary work in developing educational resources for all children.  Homework help areas, youth services, and links to other valuable educational sites and resources.

700 Great Sites for Kids - Developed by the American Library Association, this site catalogs "Amazing, spectacular, mysterious, colorful web sites for children and the adults who care about them."  All in all a powerful educational resources that is well conceived and executed, and best of all, it's free. Most sites linked are educational in nature.

Kid's Space - One of the few truly international children's education portals, this site offers some interesting areas such as "Storybook" and the "Kid's Gallery" and an interactive guide called "The Guide Bear." Also different in the aspect that there is a lot of content developed by children that is utilized on the site.

Miscellaneous Educational Web Sites

Ask An Expert - A page with links to various expert resources where students can actually inquire about specific topics and subjects with an expert in that area.  Also links to other sites with expert help.

Children's Literature Web Guide - A listing of resources for educators and students interested in Literature. 

4Kids Tree house - While not designed with the cartoon like interface of so many other such sites, this site does offer students and parents a wide variety of excellent educational resources covering a good range of topics, along with a "study center" and a "search thingy."

BBC Schools Online - Developed for Britain's students, this site is still a very valuable resource for self education, covering just about every topic in school these days.
