Social Issues for People of Color and
all citizens
Despite the recent surge in nationalistic pride and patriotic
rhetoric due to the attacks of September 11th, 2001, the fact remains that all
of the ills of our society that existed prior to that fateful morning remain
issues after these terrible events as well. We cannot allow the rush of
emotion that has engulfed our nation as we defend ourselves from a very lethal
and insidious enemy steer us away from our ongoing goal of isolating,
confronting and resolving the major social ills of out time, particularly those
that effect the minority communities of South Florida.
Some of the issues that we must address over time include:
|
Cutbacks in Social Programs to fund pork-barrel legislation
passed primarily through the efforts of professional lobbyists as opposed to
taking the needs of the people as the number one consideration. |
|
The significant Violations of the Voting Rights Act of 1966
that occurred during the 2000 presidential elections and the prevention of
similar violations in the future. |
|
Lack of local Recreational Facilities for our Youth. |
|
Discrimination in hiring practices and advancement opportunities
by government agencies and private sector businesses. |
|
Discrimination in the awarding of government contracts. |
|
Ongoing incidents of racial harassment, discrimination and prejudice
throughout the South Florida area. |
| Incidents of Police Brutality, racial discrimination, and
racial profiling on the part of the Police Agencies in the area. The Fort
Lauderdale NAACP has stated it's goal for the development of an official civilian review board with investigatory and
subpoena powers. |
| Disproportionate funding for public schools serving
predominantly minority and low income communities. |
